Enjoy Shakespeare in the Park – with an unique twist
Graag deel ik één van mijn meest favoriete tradities tijdens de zomer in New York City met je. Hint: theater in de buitenlucht, terwijl je wordt ondergedompeld in de natuur. Juist, ik heb het over Shakespeare in the Park, maar dan met een bijzondere twist!
Shakespeare in the Park brengt Shakespeare-toneelstukken naar het podium van het Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Tickets zijn gratis maar worden verloot. De beste manier om deze activiteit gegarandeerd te ervaren, is vanaf boven! Als je het sprookjesachtige Belvedere Castle beklimt, vindt je een prachtige veranda waar je op het podium kunt uitkijken. Hier zit je onder de sterrenhemel terwijl je geniet van de romantische dialogen van Shakespeare. Toegegeven: het zicht op het podium is niet perfect, maar de echo vanaf één van de meest dromerige plekken in NYC is magisch!

Shakespeare in the Park is a program that stages productions of Shakespearean plays at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Tickets are free but must be acquired by lottery. The best way to experience this tradition though, is from above! If you head up to the enchanting Belvedere Castle, you will find a lovely gazebo overlooking the stage. It is here where you can sit under the stars and enjoy the romantic dialogue of Shakespeare in the night. Though stage visibility will be limited, the magic is in the echo from one of the dreamiest spots in NYC!

Mijn go to spot voor een lekker verfrissend biertje is Spritzenhaus Bier Hall. Hier vind je simpelweg de beste bierselectie van Brooklyn. Plus een erg aantrekkelijke sfeer maakt deze bar in Greenpoint een echte zomerfavoriet. Fantastisch!
Spritzenhaus Bier Hall has been my go to spot for a nice and refreshing beer. Easily the best and most curated beer selection in Brooklyn mixed with a very inviting drinking atmosphere makes neighborhood bar in Greenpoint a summer staple. Superb!
Goed gegeten en gedronken en voel je je groovy? Dan is Café Balearica de plek waar je wilt zijn! Met een fantastische sfeer brengt de deze bar/club de energie van de Balearen naar Williamsburg. Wat gemakkelijk verandert van een leuke ontmoeting tot een oneindige danssessie in de nacht, die je niet snel zal vergeten.
Did you eat and drink your way through Brooklyn and feeling groovy in any bit, Café Balearica is the spot to be! With an absolutely amazing ambiance, this bar/ club rings the energy from the Balearic Islands to Williamsburg. What easily turns from a nice meet up to dancing the night away oasis in the basement that you will never forget.

Discover New York’s backyard: Governors Island
Als local weet ik als geen ander hoe een zomer in New York aanvoelt. Natuurlijk zonnig en warm. Dat klinkt misschien aantrekkelijk, maar door de luchtvochtigheid en de drukte kan de warmte ook echt op je afkomen. Niets zo lekker om dan wat verfrissing op te zoeken. Mijn favoriet van deze zomer is Governors Island!
Je komt er met de Governors Island Ferry of de NYC Ferry. Leuke tip: deze is gratis op zaterdag en zondag voor 12PM. Je kunt een fiets huren en helemaal rond het autovrije eiland fietsen. Overal vind je grasvelden, lounge plekken met strandstoelen of zelfs hangmatten en er is een ware glamping! Snuif wat cultuur op door te leren over de gouverneurswoningen en geniet, tussen de locals, van een snack bij één van de vele foodtrucks. Wat dacht je van een cocktail met fantastisch uitzicht op Manhattan als afsluiter? En niets zo mooi om tijdens zonsondergang de ferry weer terug te nemen.
As a local I know like no other how summer in New York feels like. Clearly sunny and warm. This might sounds tempting, but because of the humidity and the hustle and bustle of the city the summer heat can be too much for some activities. Nothing better to look for a cooling breeze. My favorite place to visit this summer is Governors Island!
You can either take the Governors Island Ferry or NYC Ferry. Nice tip: on Saturday and Sunday anyone can ride free, before 12PM. You can rent a bike and circle the car-free island. During the summer months you will find lawns and lounge spots with beach chairs and hammocks. You could even go glamping! Peak into the past in the historical governor’s houses and enjoy some nice food, amongst the locals. Also, what about a cocktail with a view to end your day? And nothing beats the incredible sunset from the ferry back.
